Srirangapatna- Balamuri Falls- KRS Dam

Srirangapatna also called as Patna by locals is a temple town of chronological significance. The temple is located 1km from the Srirangapatna KSRTC Bus station. Frequent buses (Volvo Buses and local Bus) are available from Mysore which will drop you in front of the temple. You can also get down from main bus stand and hire an Auto for 25 rupees. Srirangapatna Railway station is location just behind temple.

Ranganatha Swamy Temple Map
One can spend 1 day at Srirangapatna as there are many historical places to be visited. The temple will be crowded in weekends and Holidays and deserted during Weekdays. As it was one day plan we (office colleagues) planned to start at early morning 6.15 AM from jayadeva flyover and pickup few of them on the way, which did not happen because as usual few of them were late!! But still managed to start at 7.15AM itself. We had breakfast  i:e Bidadi special tatte idly. Resuming our journey and heading to destination which was planned to visit in srirangapatna was Ranganathaswamy temple.Sited on an island in the Kaveri river, Srirangapatna was capital of Tipu Sultan.

Balamuri Falls

Centre of Balamuri Falls

The town takes its name from the Ranganathaswamy temple. Srirangapattana is an important Vaishnavite centres of pilgrimage. Ranganatha, a facade of Vishnu and is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams. The temple is one of a set of three major temples that are built on three different islands on the Kaveri and are dedicated to lord Ranganatha. Adi Ranga - at Srirangapattana, Madhya Ranga - at Shivanasamudra, Antya Ranga - at Srirangam. Hindus come from far and wide to Srirangapatna to immerse the ashes of their dead relatives.
Srirangapatna was founded by the Ganga Dynasty in the 9th century. The city shot to fame during the rule of Vijayanagara Empire. The Wodeyar dynasty rose into prominence with the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was believed that any person who had control of Srirangapatna and conducted the 10-day Navratri festival, would rule over Mysore. Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali defeated the Woodeyar King and made Srirangapatna their capital for a brief period. In the Battle of Srirangapatna in 1799, Tipu Sultan was killed died inside the fort by the combined armies of Nizam of Hyderabad and the British.

Still at Sangama
Sangama, the place where three holy rivers Kaveri, Kabini and Hemavati have fused. One special attraction of that place is typical coracle boat used in rural areas. People can go to the main Sangam point of the three rivers using those boats. Since we were short of time we couldn’t visit Dariya Daulat Palace, Yedamuri Falls,Ranganathittu.

Teppa Ride at Balamuri Falls

Balmuri Falls, Srirangapatna It is a man-made reservoir is built across the River Cauvery and is the most suitable place for tourists. The ideal time to visit this waterfall is during the winter season as the water level is comparatively high then and tourists can enjoy bathing and playing in the open air.  There are few coracle boats also here which will drop middle of the reservoir and drop back when you want.  After spending more than 3 hrs in falls, we started back and have lunch nearby srirangapatna at 4 PM. The initial plan was to visit Manchinbelle dam 30km away from Bangalore near big baniyan tree. Since we spent most of time in falls we couldn’t make it to Manchinbellle dam. So instantly we planned to go to KRS Dam. We tried flying kites in between the fields but we couldn’t get proper place to fly.

KRS Dam Overflow

KRS Dam
After a long day with history and Nature,We headed to KRS or Krishna Raja Sagara, is the name of both, a lake and the dam that causes it. The dam was built across river Kaveri in 1924. Apart from being the main source of water for irrigation in the most fertile Mysore and Mandya, the reservoir is the main source of drinking water for almost the whole of Bangalore city. The Brindavan Gardens is a show garden that has a botanical park, with fountains, as well as boat rides beneath the dam. Diwans of Mysore planned and built the gardens in connection with the construction of the dam. KRS Dam was the first to install automated Crest gates during 1920 and Brindavan Garden was the first in India to display a musical fountain.

Musical Fountain at KRS

The show for musical fountains starts at 7 pm. every evening and continues for an hour. Depending on the sunset, timings may vary for the musical show. It was 8 PM we headed back to Bangalore On the way we had dinner at MC’Donalds.  After home delivery to everybody. It was 2.15AM when last person reached the home.

Rided Yelagiri

Its been almost more than 2 and half months I have not gone out, thought to give myself a change to my athma! Plan was to spend 2 days 1 night in yelagiri, inspite of knowing its not the right time but its time to travel. Finally plan of yelagiri accomplished. Started bangalore at 6AM and reached yelagiri at 10.25AM. Inclusive of breakfast and a break as well. It was 50:50 expectations of yelagiri since it was not right time to visit because of summer. But if it was rainy season also i don't think there is something to spend for 2 days. Its just one day program not more than that!!.

Yelagiri Overview
Places to visit at Yelagiri Malai: Punganoor Lake, Murugan Temple, Swamimalai, Paragliding Point.
Paragliding will be open 4-5 days in a year in the month of august, Please confirm before planning.
We spent only 1-30 hrs in yelagiri, returned as we were open to come back as well. "Sometimes we should consider journey as destination". Ghat road was good with few hairpin bends. Its not cool as bangalore. I don't know why it is oftenly known as Poor Mans ooty! Only good of yelagiri is variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. Yes there are lodges to stay but I don't think there is a need of that.

Piligrimage to Shirdi, Shani Shingnapur, Trimbakeshwar, Panchavati

A sudden inspiration, a chance offered by a stranger, a longing to get away, a legitimate reason to go. All this led to Shirdi. Packing was completely disorganized and it felt so odd to go off alone to Hyderabad, since My friend also joining from there.
As far as my religious orientation goes, I’m somewhere not between a cynic and a believer, I am a believer of god atleast for some extent. Anyways, it was saturday that I found myself in Shirdi and standing in that small queue (since it was early morning) to get a sight of the ‘holy one’ known popularly as Shirdi Wale Sai Baba. You may ask what prompted my visit? A fair question, indeed. Let’s say it was 40% curiosity and 30% bhakti. Rest because I am travelholic.

Trimbakeshwar Temple
After 30mins the moment finally arrived when I had first view of Sai Baba. The view was breathtaking, Sai idol is made out of marble (complete white) and is of life size. The facial carve is almost realistic and would stun you for a moment.  The hall is big where the Samadhi is placed (in front of the life size Idol) and is having 2 lines to form queue one on each side of the hall. You can touch and bow to Samadhi and offer your prayers. Samadhi stage is usually occupied by four priest two on each side of the Idol. There are few place inside sai baba premises where baba had lived and done miracles, served food for poor.i.e Gurusthan,  Dwarkamai, Chavadi.
Shani Shingnapur is a village about 70 kms from Shirdi and legend has it that there is not a single shop in the village that has shutters or locks and even then not a single incident of theft or robbery has been reported over here it seems.
Shingnapur is famous for the Shani temple here and pilgrims visiting Shirdi usually take out about three-four hours and make a day trip to the Shani temple to pay obeisance to the god who represents our planet or graha in Hinduism.

Shani Singanapur
Getting transport to Shingnapur from Shirdi is both easy and cheap as a round trip on one of the many jeeps that ply devotees between the two temples costs just Rs. 100 per person. If you don’t want to travel via a jeep then you’ll have to either hire a tourist cab or bring your own vehicle. Entering to shingnapur there are people who divert your mind to take you this and that etc!! Which we were trapped actually!!  It’s really disgusting how they grab money in name of god. Yanthra, manthra, etc etc. After which the guide who took us for devastanam darshan also asking for dakshina(dhana). As per my belief dhana is whatever you get from others without asking or begging! Per head each the guide was begging 200rs i.e. total 400 rs for 2 guys. I was controlling my patience but after that I yell at him and sent back!. Because yanthra all that cost was 750 rs per head and upon that the guide. The same yanthra whatever you call its cost was 250 in some other shop. In the name of god people are grabbing money be alert. So I decided from than not to drop kanika in temples! But I know I will do it again and again that is human tendency or fear or sentiment or anything you may call it on. It was same case in shirdi also. People come for peace, blessings and such things happen to them.  I am thinking atleast once in a year I go to some anathashram or disabled or orphanaged home serve one time food which will make me feel good! Anyways it’s left to individual belief. Thinking “Jho hota hain ache keliye hota hain” pausing my keyboard. Thinking of next day to Trimbakeshwar Temple, Panchavati, Mukthi dham fell asleep early because had to start early next morning at 6AM. Was eagerly waiting whether it will be suffer or Saffar.

Ram Kund
Kala Ram

Plan was to go to Muktidham, Trimbakeshwar Temple, Panchavati which is around 2 hrs from shirdi. We had booked a cab (indica) whose cost was 1800rs. After bargain it was 1600rs to and fro.
Mukthi Dham is also called as Birla temple. In Hyderabad Birla temple is of lord Venkateshwara where in Nashik  it is honoring hindu gods in series!

Mukthi Dham, Nashik
Trimbakeshwar Temple is one of the holiest and sacred place for Hindu pilgrims and is revered as a one of the 12 jyotirlinga shrins of Lord Shiva in India. The temple lies in the foothill of mountain Bhramagiri which is the origin of river Ganga (called here by name Godavari). The most attractive part of this temple is presence of 3 linga's each representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Frankly speaking I dint notice the above unfortunately! Amazed by the beauty of Trimbakeshwar Temple, it was looking like a “Black Beauty”.

Sita Cave, Panchavati
The name Panchavati it got is from the five banyan tree present in the vicinity where Lord Ram and Sita spent their exile period. The name Nasik also has a legend, during exile period Laxman (brother of Shri Ram) cut off Shupernakha's Nose (In Sanskrit Nose means "Nasik") and throws it on other side of the river Godavari (Ganga) which then christened as "Nasik" or "Nashik". Thus on one side of the sacred river is known as Nasik while other side where five banyan tree is known as Panchavati.

Naroshankar Temple
There are few places to see in panchavati. Its Ramkund, Kapaleshwar temple, Sita Cave ( sita gumpha) the cave which is believed to be where Devi Sita was stayed to hide herself from Demons. panchavati is coverable in 1 km. so places don’t hire a guide with auto! Which we were forced to do. Pleasure is mine to say thank you to my friend who planned the piligrimage. Back to shirdi by 3 PM. It took almost 24 hrs from shirdi to Bangalore via pune in bus.

Melokote Over Rided

Hill Top
Road Map

Bangalore -> Mandya (~105km) -> Right turn after Mandya city ( Land Mark Railway crossing)-> Melukote (~42km).

Starting Early morning from Bangalore(Bike-Ride) Reaching Melukote around 12noon. The Journey was little tiring but as we had taken pit stops regularly it was tolerable! Lush green beauty between mandya and melukote was  staggering, with paddy fields, Raggi Flowers, masses of sugarcane fields and Traditional way of Jaggery making units. Made us to forget the technology, Laptops, I-pads, smartphones, smart company as well.

Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple

There are steps that lead to the top. Steep and quite a climb, but should not take too long. You should finish it under 20-300 minutes even if you are pretty unfit. If in case, you plan to visit in the evening and spend more time at the top Do take a torch with you.

Yoga Narasimha Temple
Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple

The Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple is built on the foothills of Yadugiri and is situated about 145 kms from Bangalore and about 50 kms from Mysore. The temple is dedicated to Thirunarayana or Cheluva Narayana. On the top of the hill there is a temple for Yoga Narasimha. There is also a beautiful stepped tank at the base of the hill. It believed that the famous Srivaishnava Saint Ramanujacharya resided here for about 12 years in the 12th Century, thus making it a prominent place for Srivaishnava Sect and also home to the Academy of Sanskrit Research.
Vairamudi Brahmostava is an annual festival which attracts more than 3-4 lakh devotees of Lord Cheluva Narayana.

The beautiful pond near the Cheluva-narayana swamy temple. It has an unrivaled appeal to it. Early morning spent here can be very peaceful.
Pushkarani
 Raya Gopura
Neighboring folks say that it was built in a night. Unfinished but interesting structure of large and heavy stone blocks. Local guy hanging out there mentioned a few movies shot in the area – Padayappa, Guru, Shivaji, etc.
RayaGopura
Akka Thangi Kola
Literally translates to elder and younger sister ponds. Located next to each other, just below the Raya Gopura.

Last but not the least Melkote is incomplete without discussing Puliyogare (tamarind rice) and the delicious Sakkare pongal (sweet rice dish). My not-so-exhaustive research tells that Subbanna mess is the best place to eat both of them along with their special Mango chutney.

Pondichery Logs

I really wanted to "give time a break". It’s been long time I have been thinking of going to Pondicherry , Chidambaram, Pichavaram!!
The city has a distinct french feel to it even now. Especially places near the beach road. Roads meet at perfect right angles, many streets still have french names and the place is so clean that you wouldn’t feel you are in an Indian city.

Appealing, serene Pondicherry… it’s one place that entices you with its laid-back, hassle-free, old-world charm. As you sit soaking in the warm sun close to the beach on the main Pondi road — that fortunately is minus any traffic and hence a boon for walkers.

we had taken Boat House but not so good. Just a new experience. Strictly not for Ladies.
Many good resorts which are in budgeted as well good need to explore that’s it.

Port Area Pondicherry
Pichavaram the second largest Mangrove forest in the world, near the temple town of Chidambaram , is one of the unique Eco-tourism spots in South India. The Pichavaram mangroves are considered among the healthiest mangrove occurrence in the world. Pichavaram consists of a number of islands interspersing a vast expanse of water covered with green trees. The Pichavaram mangrove biotope, with its peculiar topography and environmental condition, supports the existence of many rare varieties of economically important shell and finfishes.
Boating more than 2 hrs will be boring. People say they will take still inside the forest but whatever package we had taken for 2 hrs made us happy! In case anybody wants to spend some more time in the boat can do by shelling out some currency for the boat rider. Better to take rowe boat instead motor because motor boat will not go deep inside the Mangroves.
Boating Time: 9.AM to 5 PM

Rower charge: 120rs

Chidambaram Nataraja Temple:
It was 2nd time I am visiting Chidambaram. 1st time in the year 2004 I visited at the time I had come for South India University Badminton Match at Annamalai University. But I dint get a chance to visit temple.
History: Since ancient times, it is believed that this is the place where Shiva and his consort Parvati are present, but invisible to most people. In the temple, Chidambara Ragasiyam is hidden by a curtain (symbolic of Maya). Worship, or darshan is possible only when priests open the curtain for special pujas. Behind the curtain are golden leaves, as from the Aegle Marmelos tree, signifying the presence of Shiva and Parvati. It is believed that saints can see the gods in their physical form.

Chidambaram Natraja Temple
The phrase "Chidambara Ragasiyam" really means something different. The pharse literally means a secret associated to Chidambaram - the place. Behind this is a real meaning to a secret. As described above there is a particular curtain kind of curtain which when removed enables us viewing the secret. The real significance of doing so is that, when the curtain which is "maya" is removed one can see his real self. And the seeing of oneself removing the curtain of maya is viewing the secret. According to legend, "Chidambara Ragasiyam" will never be revealed as it is the secret relating to a particular person who sees it removing the screen of "maya". In the temple, when the poojas are performed and the screen is removed, one will be able to see the secret only when he applies this to his mind and soul. To Realise oneself.

I am obsessed with travelling and will continue to be thrilled by the beauty and chaos.
